I love hearing from singers out there in the real world & many thanks to one brave singer who wrote to me following a video about vocal nodule information that I made recently.

Hello Bob!

Yes, vocal polyps can go away - about 6 years ago I myself was warned that I was at risk of developing vocal nodules if I did not take more care of myself & my voice. Hence the reason that I think it is so important to make videos informing people about this stuff. The great news is, in 3 - 6 months I got better & I hope for you that you will too.

I really was thrashing my voice, doing lots of gigging, singing teaching (the talking was perhaps the source of my vocal irritation) and probably just simply rushing around doing too much.

I know it sounds perhaps restrictive for now, but if you can do the following you have a much better chance of recovery.

1. Rest up! This means both physical rest for your body & vocalising rest for your voice. Send a text message or an email instead of leaving a voicemail, avoid speaking & singing altogether for a while as rest now will pay off.

2. Drink water &/or steam inhalations. When you drink, it takes a couple of days for the hydration to start positively affecting your vocal chords as it has to go through your whole system. When you drink it does not go anywhere near your vocal chords as the water goes down into your stomach. You will know this because if you drink water & it goes down the wrong way, all your layrnx wants to do is cough it out again so that it doesn't go down into your lungs. Steam (when you breathe it in) DOES go to your vocal folds. A simple cup of hot water & breathing in the steam will do.

3. Stop smoking - if you do.

4. Avoid irritant foods/caffeine/dairy products

5. If you have a speech therapist, ask if they can measure if you are always speaking at the same pitch? I was, and so now if my voice feels like it is getting tired, I use different voice qualities & different pitches to mix things up a little bit & ensure that my vocal folds are not always coming together at the same point again & again.

6. Reduce time spent with people or situations which make you feel distressed - the laynx is super sensitive to stress. Shouting is a big cause of vocal trauma.

7. Treat yourself nicely for a few months! :-)

1. In what ways do you think music and psychology are related?

Chip's Answer: I would say that anything that human's do as a performance has a lot to do with your state of mind. The best singers I have taught over the years have clear focus & goals whilst learning their musical craft. Many singing students arrive & are understandably nervous, so as a vocal teacher it is important to put people at ease & help them to realise that the more they have hands on experience the better a musician they will be. Music is an extraordinary gift at times and a "wriggling squid" at other times! Sometimes when we are performing we have to quieten down the self critical voice in order to get to the most beautiful musical expression.

2. How does your vocal coaching benefit people in a therapeutic way?

Chip's Answer: The simplest way of answering this question is by saying that many times voice students arrived frazzled from their work/lives etc. They nearly always leave smiling once having had a good sing!

3. Do you run workshops, and if so, what age groups do you cater for?

Chip's Answer:No, I used to, but the organisational side of this is quite intense!

4. If you have any clients with a disability or behavioural problem, what techniques do you use?

Chip's Answer: I have a student with Aspergers who is very talented at music and sometimes doubts their abilities to understand the lesson so we keep in regular email contact in between lessons to ensure that they have understood things. I also have had people with depression, manic depression and also regularly have people with dyslexia/dyspraxia. Dyslexia seems to go hand in hand with musical talent, and in my experience as longs as one finds out whether the learner is a visual learner, auditory digital or kinaesthetic then the lessons can be targeted much better.

5. Do you have any employees to help you with the administrative side of the business?

Chip's Answer: No, previously yes when I ran an agency, but sadly no longer. I have a bookeeper to help me keep accounts & an accountant who once a year assists in filling out my tax return.

Songs I have recorded and produced...

Well, it has been a wonderful week as I have been digging out music I have recorded, written & produced. This is allowing me to go over the intense experience that writing, recording, and singing can be. The only thing I can compare it to is with having a new 'song baby'. You get the lyrics working, the chord progression then the melody as the cherry on top. Sometimes a small adaptation in the mix can really make a song, other times the re-arrangement of a section to introduce some interesting dynamics or a build-up can be the making of the music.

This song "With Poison (Hold On)" was co-written by Rachel Fellini and Chip Jenkins, with engineering by Matt Twaites. We worked on Rachel's Orchestral House Sound to support her "Madonna-inspired" singing career.

Sucessful Singers - Their Mindset

One thing you will notice about successful singers and people in the music industry is that they exude an air of self-belief that’s easy to admire.

They have their feet firmly planted on the ground as there is a lot of consistency required to be a successful singer, even Beyonce has to rehearse hard! In fact, that is what has got her that good in the first place.

They are also centered – once you start having success as a vocalist or songwriter, you need to keep your wits about you to ensure that you look after your interests – everyone will suddenly want a piece of you!

Their view of the world is that of an optimist – motivation works far more in people taking action than self criticism. Get rid of the inner chatterbox that gives you a running commentary on what went wrong with that note, why your voice cracked or you ran out of breath. It does not do you any good - Focus on what is good!

Next, they will have genuine enthusiasm and passion for their music, singing, songwriting, promotion (be that photography, promotion etc) and of course the business side. Without this type of passion, how are you going to overcome the obstacles that even everyday life throws in your path?

Quick-witted to adapt and change if appropriate – would Madonna have remained a leader in her field if she were still using the same musical trends as when she released “Like a Virgin” and was prancing about in black lace fingerless gloves with crimped hair?

They are usually surrounded by like-minded, and often equally successful, friends and colleagues who radiate a similar positive energy. Look at those surrounding you and evaluate if they are helping themselves in their own life and moving forwards? If they are just sitting around criticizing everyone who has succeeded, perhaps it is time to work out how the time could be better spent?

They realize the importance of a support network – the idea of being a self-made man or woman is a false one as “It Takes Teamwork to make the Dream Work”

Lastly, failure is the furthest thing from anyone’s mind when these people are around.

Charlotte Taylor - Jazzy Vocal from Brighton Singing Lessons

Charlotte is an experienced actress who realises that in order to stay ahead of the game in her chosen field, she needs to be able to provide a wide range of performance skills. She has previously been given quite important roles and is quite used to being onstage. The vocal techniques we have worked on together include singing improvisation, awareness of vocal anatomy & how it all works and also how to manipulate her voice to get the sound she wanted.

Although a lover of Jazz, she had not tried to sing it before & we worked on her tone to get the Diana Krall slinky intimate style and also her delivery. Just like a monologue in a play, timing is all. In addition, rhythmic accents give extra class to a Jazz vocal.

My goodness, Whitnee is a great vocalist. At Brighton Singing Lessons HQ, we did 3 takes & all of the phrases were nigh on equally as good as each other! We worked on vocal placement, nasality and vowel control on these vocal takes to re-create Hayley Williams's sound.

Well, it has already been a busy start to this year... I have completed the production of 3 new tracks up on i-tunes sung & co-written by Rachel Fellini. Although it is tempting, avoid closing your eyes or looking down, as you want the audience to feel a connection with you.

Tips of your session demo from Brighton Singing teacher

My best tip to you would be to start by compiling your session demo... I helped a gentleman who specialises in Rock vocals to do a YouTube session demo which he has been using to look for session work

The easy thing to do is just include a link when you are sending things off to session agencies etc.

You can then simultaneously show people what you look like at the same time as seducing them with your voice!

In order to let people know about your singing you need the next level of marketing to ensure that you publicise your voice and musicianship.

You Tube is an incredible method of publicising what you do. Goodness, since January alone, my “how to use the diaphragm” video has had a staggering 9,745 views!!!

So, what do you need to make you a cool video for your own promo purposes?

You will need

A quality MP3 of your voice (shortened down to 1min 30secs)
4 –5 quality static pictures
A YouTube account

Consider which artist name you would like to publicise – let’s pick a crazy artist name like “Sparkle Kate” and then set up a valid gmail account with password eg. “sparklekate@gmail.com”

Then link it up your facebook, twitter, blog and other PR material to ensure that each time you upload something new, everyone knows.

I have done something similar for Rachel Fellini (an artist I am assisting as I produced the music)

Once the i-tunes tracks are available it will go straight to her store.

If you already have i-tunes set up, you can set up a hyperlink to boost your sales!

Summer News from Brighton Singing Lessons

It is Summer! (well sort of...)

We have lots of new singing students’ recordings which will be going up one by one onto the website http://www.brightonsinginglessons.co.uk, so if you are curious to hear what you could be doing please come & have a look!

So many of you have been coming along while you are actually gigging, writing and recording. This makes the job so exciting as I get to know that your progress will immediately be put to good use!

People I would like to mention from this month are: Dom – his rock band are superb http://www.myspace.com/bridgestoburn & he is just about to go into the studio to record (Porcupine Tree & Cradle of Filth have just used the studio before them).

The songs are rock solid and his voice was so loud I had to have the mic turned down to a mere third of its potential!

What to drink if your voice is hoarse

Well, it depends on the severity of your vocal fatigue. Certainly all speech therapists comment on the need to stay hydrated at all times and I have to say that ice cold water is a big no-no in terms of your voice.

So, if all the advice about vocal health is: avoid tea, avoid coffee and sugary drinks - what is there left to drink?!

Well, I have been drinking a good old fashioned cup of hot water mixed with cold and although at first a little boring, I now love it!

If you want to get some gentle herbs like chamomile this will add a little taste, yet having no 'bad stuff' will only help you with your vocal health.

If of course, you have been screaming at a gig or club and feel some vocal fatigue, then just a cup of hot water is not going to change things, some good singing lessons and techniques are needed here - before damage is done.

I always get a warning that the X-factor auditions are coming up as the phone starts to ring like crazy at Brighton Singing Lessons!

So, for your ease of finding out all about the Terms and conditions of this year's X-factor, here is some important information.

Age - you have to be 16 or over as the X-factor are planning to do a 2-show format this year & European Law will not allow those younger than 16 to take part in this.

This year’s audition process is by video BEFORE APRIL 24th - it’s not too late to apply!

The ability to broaden your vocal sound really begins with the art of listening. To gain the most from your singing & vocal practise, make notes in your singing diary outlining today’s topics. Assess what will be challenging for you, and the strong points you already bring to your musical career. Record yourself at regular intervals during practice times to assess your own progress.

By doing a lot of practical, hands-on singing, keep your mind on all those incredibly important basics such as timing, tuning, harmony, posture, breathing and mic technique. When you have perfected your solo performance, don’t forget to practise playing in a group too! The best singers are often a lot more prepared than they would have you believe – even if it looks like an unprepared performance.

You will develop the ability to take and give instruction. To see from both sides what the job entails, I would like you to understand the singer’s perspective, and that of the producer.

We will focus on the ways that you can manipulate your voice to get it to do what you want, and develop the ability to stretch your voice and imitate other people’s vocal technique, to enable yourself to improvise more proficiently.

Synchronise beginnings and endings of words with the lead vocalist.

Pick out your note from a chord either from the guitar or keyboard, it will be true to pitch.

Observe pronunciation habits of the other singers to create a smoother blend

Use good posture, as this will help you control lots of things about the note – the tone, using controlled breathing, the pitch, and a better sound in the mic, as you have a directed sound.

If you need to sing a specific note within the harmony, sing throughout the bars leading up to that section even if it does not go over the preceeding chords.

Pick a ‘reminder note’. Is there a word in the lead melody that is the same as the note you will be singing?

In your head, sing along with the lead vocalist all the time so that you can match the dynamic impact of the lead vocal when the backing harmony comes in. This helps you to tune in to the intensity of emotion the lead vocalist has lent to their vocal.

Always remember, you are a supporting instrument. Sing the BV’s for the sake of making the song better. Play with timbre and tone to create the underpinning, without trampling all over the lead vocal.

The difference between Session Singing and Being an Artist

The main way to succeed as a session singer is by broadening your vocal skills - unlike being an artist when you are mainly looking to develop a unique sound.

My advice would be to learn how to work with a producer by contacting all the local studios and at first offering your services for free.

By joining a choir you will improve your ability not only to sight-sing but also the gift of being able to guess which backing vocals will work over the chords of the song. A valuable asset to have, practise your ability to harmonise as much as you possibly can to sensitively support what the lead vocalist is singing.

Once you have experience and practise it gets easier to pick out harmonies.

Many of us are so involved in the feelings we are feeling whilst onstage that we forget to step outside ourselves and think about how to reflect back emotions to people…

The concentration required to weave an intricate musical puzzle is something of obvious absorption to the participants.

As an audience member we tend to have the utmost respect that a vocalist is able to single-mindedly zone in to what they are doing in the present moment.

Basically, the minute you are on a platform, you are required to give 100% focus and concentration to what you are doing.

Think about it, when you are onstage you have a “job to do” of some sort. Now that may be giving a presentation, a recital or performance.

So many people focus instead on their own uncomfortable feelings – be they nerves, over excitement, or utter fear. I know myself as a performer I may be sometimes instead focusing in on the imperfections of my own performance instead of very humbly getting on with the job at hand that I am there to do.

This is not a course teaching you how to arrogantly alienate your audience. Remember, they don’t want to have their own arrogance focused back at them – that will be uncomfortable for them!

So, we will get to the great part where we look at harnessing nerves and using them for the good of your performance next, but before we do, let’s complete the following statement…

Singing for the Sake of the Song

An extraordinarily talented producer I have worked with said "a good session singer must have the ability to tune in to what is needed for the song style, and to be able to provide the right sound". This got me thinking....

I may put my own personal taste aside whilst singing as the producer has a vision of what is best for the track. I always keep abreast of current music to ensure that I have an array of different approaches to provide in a session. Of course, brushing up every now and then on my theory and sight singing are also an ongoing pursuit.

This means that ongoing vocal practise is an everyday occurrence just to ensure an understanding of the musical learning required. If I may make a suggestion, it is wise to constantly assess your understanding of vocal techniques, and practical application of those techniques. By reading books on singing, you can take a step back, truly understand how the voice works and then apply the concept for real in your singing.

I had a test recently to find out how my brain works & it actually revealed that one of my best skills was mimicry! Highly useful when you want to learn a language :-) You can end up sounding like a local!

This caused me to wonder - are all talented singers simply talented mimics? Answers on a postcard, please! More in the next blog...

One of the key elements to succeeding in the arena of Session Singing is being able to mimic well and provide a broad palette of vocal sounds. This can make you money as a session singer.

The skill of working with a producer to obtain exactly the sound that he/she wants is a must. Top session singers are those that are able to provide many different aspects to their voice.

Your ability to sing backing vocals will also be needed, especially in the era where home studios are the norm & people no longer hire in an entire choir.

I constantly practise my ability to harmonise to songs on the radio by making up new harmonies that would go with the chords underpinning the vocal topline melody.

Do

Warm-up your neck, shoulders and vocal folds before you sing.
Get plenty of sleep
Ensure you are well hydrated - drink plenty of water - only warm water when singing.
Rehearse at a low volume when using your voice a lot to protect your voice
Rest your voice if it feels tired
Ensure you warm-down after singing, especially when touring.
Make sure you eat at least 5 hours before going to sleep & maintain a healthy diet. Acid reflux affects the vocal folds.

Don't

Sing from your throat
Shout if you can't hear yourself in the monitor mix politely ask the sound engineer to please turn it up!
Eat dairy products
Smoke
Shout or talk loudly after a gig especially in loud venues.
Sing with a breathy tone as this dries out your vocal folds.
Eat hot spicy food
Take drugs
Cough (try swallowing to ease the tickle).
Eat a huge dinner before you sing (it is harder to use the diaphragm on a full stomach and support those notes!)

In the meantime, here are some thought-provoking questions to get you thinking about how to improve your career:

1. Assess how you can make an impact on the live circuit.

2.What is your unique selling point (USP)?

3. What kind of personalities would you like to have in your band? I often suggest writing out an actual list to get really clear on they type of people you truly wish to work with as you will spend a lot of time with them on tour!

4. Now onto songwriting: Pick through each line of your self-written song and analyse the use of musical hooks.

5.What is the structure of your song? Do you always write using the same formula? Is this intentional?

6. What arrangement techniques could you use or have been used to give the dynamic lift to the chorus?

Planning an Album - tips from Brighton Singing Lessons

When you have written songs, the next step is to explain your vision to the producer. I often advice singers who are at the stage of recording their first important body of songs and we have a few pre-production plans in place to help give direction to a producer....

1. Write out for yourself a list of your favourite ten songs in your record collection.

2. Is the instrumentation generally live or midi?

After you have established this, I find that singers as a general rule tend to fall into one of two main camps:

4. Or the sound of piano/keyboard bass/violins etc?

5. Assess what kind of live performer you would like to be.

6. Do you have any additional requirements - eg. a DJ onstage with you, choroegraphy, does the drummer need to play to a click etc?

7. Are you intending to play with a live band or to a backing track? This may affect how you record your songs as the audience will know & love the album's sound.

Have you ever used a mirror as an observation tool whilst singing to check that your posture is relaxed? I know many singers already use mirrors to check that their performance is interesting to watch.

It is worth putting in the work to obtain an easy and unobstructed sound, whilst communicating intent and feeling to your audience.

If you can work with a partner who also sings, observe each other whilst singing and give them objective praise for what they are doing right, and useful tips if there is any area of their performance that needs strengthening.

Lastly, practise the lyrics in different accents to see just how much this affects the placement of vowels.

Nowadays of you are a vocalist, it is no longer uniquely a case of working on your voice in order to succeed. The demands of a music industry career may cause you to be required to know a little about everything from website design, or how to get onto a music agency.

Many of my singing students also tend to have come across the rather uncomfortable feeling of stagefright, or at the very least shirk away from promoting themselves in the Music Industry. I now give coaching to help encourage people of an artistic nature to break through those barriers holding them back & I am delighted to report that thanks to some personal development courses I have been on - it is working for my students too!

The adventures of running a band, and the practicalities of getting gigs can prove a huge task for some - even getting enough motivation can be a challenge, let alone the ins & outs of being a team leader!

Progress is being made by my wonderful brighton singingstudents. One vocalist called Rachael is now songwriting once a week & I am watching her bloom into a highly proficient craftswoman of song! Another vocalist who is having music industry career coaching with me is also on fire as far as her songwriting is concerned - we have been looking at chord progressions, lyric writing & finding her unique conversational style in her lyric writing.

The past couple of months teaching singing & songwriting here in Brighton East Sussex have reminded me why I do this professionally! It has been very inspiring watching my students grow & progress not only in confidence (we have been working on Performance confidence issues too) and in skill.

Lastly, two of my students have been for auditions in the West End. Both were already working singers, and just came for a brush up in their vocal technique. Music Business Management at the University of Westminster - Hannah McMonagle - Final Project: Research Questions

Currently studying for her Masters degree in Music Business Management at the University of Westminster.

1. In your capacity as a music educator (Founder of Brighton Singing Lessons), what do you think attracts people to music education institutes?

Some want to live the X-factor dream. This has been a major influencing factor to the level of singing students at entry level & their degree of musical knowledge is less now than say 10 years ago. The previous type of student used to be very well informed in areas such as music theory, choral & harmony singing, and yet have a lot less confidence. I find that music students (I taught at ACM for 8 years, founded Brighton Singing Lessons and currently teach at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music & Chichester University) like to feel that they will be able to network, so possibly business is also a deciding factor. Many of the Brighton singing students say that they move here as they see that there is much more gigging potential for them than in Guildford, and it is perhaps less competitive than in London.

2. Do you feel that there is a clear distinction between the ability of performers found at these schools and those found outside the music education system?

Some of my private students have natural talent, and they are not within the music education system as such. I do observe that the level of commitment to becoming a fully-fledged professional working musician is stronger when surrounded by other fellow musicians and it does become a breeding ground when students are given regular opportunities to develop. I recognise for example that those students who begin the year at ACM do develop enormously through weekly performances at the Electric Theatre. Many students would take years to develop as musicians through pure “life & gigging experience”.

3. What are the qualities you look for in a vocalist?

Good question

Musicality first and foremost, followed by an appealing or original sounding voice. A willingness to perform and get beyond one’s own worries about what others might think. A sensitivity to the lyric. Good vocal technique and a quick wittedness when performing in a band context.

Do you think music schools hinder creativity or originality in any way?

I can see that some students would complain that while they are singing other people’s songs and worry about losing originality. However, all the greatest songwriters from the Beatles to Amy Winehouse have taken reference from previous creative people, and regurgitated it in their own original way.

I think if someone truly has the gift of creativity and originality and is prepared to put in some old fashioned hard graft then they can turn their gift into something special at a music school.

I do think that models of education such as the BRIT school do a sterling job of bringing out the best in creative students. There is the whole debate (too huge to go into) about traditional education versus something like Steiner Schools where students remain with the same teacher throughout their whole time at school and are not taught to read until they are sometimes 8 years old, yet are encouraged to develop their own originality of thought. It would be good to see if this type of approach worked in a music school. As a Brighton based singing teacher, I do see a lot of very creative, groundbreakingly original people as this is that kind of a town.

4. Is there a noticeable longevity in the careers of performers who have attended these schools?

Those who are prepared to craft their musical career do seem to have the edge in songwriting, performance and hopefully have additional business knowledge to make savvy decisions concerning their musical career. Examples range from the Kooks (BIMM) to Newton Faulkner (ACM) to Adele (BRIT School). However, as none of them yet have a decade of being in the charts it is perhaps too early to say…

5. What are your benchmarks for the success of an artist? Critical acclaim, revenue, etc…

My benchmark would be; a true artist who captures the imaginations of thousands of listeners, and causes people to want to leave their homes on a cold, rainy evening to venture out to see them perform. This would indicate to me that this type of artist is onto something inspiring….

Personally I set little store by the latest hype, although I know when I mention having been a teacher of Newton Faulkners or Amelle from the Sugababes other singing students are inspired to raise their game.

As an aside, my keyboard player & I had a healthy debate about the fact that being able to live from your music after years is also a privileged position to be in.

Are the qualities needed for success to do with natural talent or can they be taught?

Both. I think that there is a certain mindset that goes alongside the great performers who will eventually pierce through the barriers to success. This can be encouraged in the student.

A quality student with talent will always require mentors in order to continue to grow and expand both their minds, talents and wisdom. Even as a teacher myself I have my own teachers who assist me in raising my standards all the time & I would hope that all teachers do the same! I think having talent is great, and constantly growing with assistance from others is a natural and rewarding process too.

Whether the learning is done in devotional practise in their own bedroom or with a group of other musicians/tutors both types of learnings are valuable and important.

A huge part of the music industry and its ups and downs is the ability to self-motivate and many students think that arriving at a music school is their guarantee of success. They give up their part of responsibility and blame the institution when something is not going well, when what they really need to do is move above the state of “making excuses” for the things that they don’t wish to tackle.

6. Finally, do you think music education institutes increase the chance of success for vocalists in the contemporary popular music business?

Yes. I have recommended students for paid work & I’m sure many opportunities are offered to this type of singer than would be normally. I think it also gives a balanced overview of the different components of what it is to be a working musician. The lessons on everything from tax (business studies) to law, to arrangement, band skills, handling band politics, session work, organising gigs etc are all vital to the business. You can go about things the long hard way or you can get knowledge & fast-track your progression.

I started earning money as a Singer aged 16 - I moved to France, and busked in the street aged 18 & used to make £60 an hour (some time ago!!!!)

On returning back to the UK I recorded an album funded by a private financial backer, and did not have a website yet. www.cosmogenic.co.uk (designed by an amazing company called Clock run by Syd Nadim)

Later on, whilst in North London I was lucky enough to obtain business mentoring to help me plan how to further my career as a Session Singer – I got lucky being in the right catchment area & being a woman. For those of you thinking that you need something similar, try the Princes Trust if under 30 years old, or your local enterprise centre.

Following on from teaching singers at the Academy of Contemporary Music I set up my own Jazz Project for my own personal satisfaction www.chipjenkinsjazz.com

Then came a few further personal and business development courses when I decided to become the founder of something called the Performers Agency - things by now were getting busy, so it became necessary that it was run with a bookings director, PR lady and several bands & classical ensembles.

I like seeing people get more from their voices, get on track with their career goals in the music industry & get to live & breathe music all the time too!

I think that most other vocal coaches would agree that it is a balancing act of feeding the student the vocal technique that they really need to help them and the ability to step back while the singing student tries it out for themselves!

Sometimes I also see when people are hesitant and unsure of their voice, and where they have the potential to end up with their singing! There have been many times when talented students are the most unsure of all as they have the 'perfectionist gene' in them that tells them that they are not singing it 'right'. If this is you, then often you are a good singer - really bad singers often think that they are absolutely brilliant! :-)

Singing - Vowel Production

A Singer’s diction must have 2 main components

It must be easy to understand and
Be pleasant to listen to

To be easily understood we need good open vowel production.

Open tone or open vowel production is dependent on a particular way of creating your vowel sounds. The back parts of the mouth all react to make different shapes which turn the phonated or unphonated breath stream into voiced or unvoiced sounds.

This calls for great flexibility of this part of the vocal mechanism. This flexibility is dependent on the “forward-in-the-masque”

Procedure:

Use the two affricates, the ch in “church” and the sh in “sheep”, and the consonant^ as in “judge” to establish an open puckered position of the lips.

Repeat the following words: Sheep; judge; church.

Use large mirror or small hand mirror to observe the form or shape of the lips. This lip position can be described as an open square or a bell shape or as a small megaphone.

Sustain the following tone syllables on one pitch, using care not to re lax the open position of the lips:

Jah - jay - jo

Chee - chay - cho

Shee - shay - sho

Conclusion: The elimination of the use of the lips through the open-square position tends to bring in an enunciation of the vowel sounds by the pharynx as well as a forward-in-the-masque illusion of “nasal resonance.”
